New CT scanner reduces radiation, cancer risk
SUGAR LAND—(Sept. 7, 2010) — In the past 18 months, research study findings and major television news reports have focused on radiation exposure from computed tomography (CT) scans. A valuable diagnostic tool, CT scans provide detailed views from deep within a patient’s body. But they require much higher radiation doses than conventional X-rays, creating growing concern among researchers that CT scans may contribute to an estimated tens of thousands of future cancer cases. The new CT scanner uses less radiation to produce images, and then sharpens the images to the clarity doctors need for diagnoses. Methodist Sugar Land Hospital has taken a leading role in adopting this new technology, which became available in 2009. Since bringing the new CT scanners to Fort Bend County in November 2009, Methodist Sugar Land Hospital has been able to offer patients CT technology that dramatically reduces the amount of radiation in scans while still producing the clear images doctors need to diagnose and treat many serious health problems. Methodist Sugar Land Hospital was the first in Fort Bend County to employ this newly developed CT software—called the Adaptive Statistical Iterative Reconstruction (ASIR), by GE, that experts say can reduce the radiation dose by 30 to 40 percent. “I think it’s realistic for people to want to know more about this,” says Robert Malone, M.D., board certified radiologist at Methodist Sugar Land Hospital. “Five years ago, patients almost never asked about the amount of radiation. In the past year to two years, the amount of concern has increased exponentially.” “Publicity was generated about three years ago after the American College of Radiology decided to study the issue,” Malone says. And, he adds, “public interest has been further stoked by the news reports about radiation exposure from CT scans.” “In response to growing concerns about radiation risks, CT manufacturers have made improvements that lower the radiation dose, while still providing physicians the sharp images they need for diagnosis,” Malone says. The advances include a CT scanner that adjusts the level of radiation used in a scan, depending in the area of the body that is being examined. For example, a lower dose is needed for the chest than for the abdomen, which has more soft tissue for the radiation to penetrate. “If you didn’t have this software, you’d need significantly more radiation to get the same image,” Malone says. “We’ve had this technology on board since November 2009 and we haven’t seen any decrease in image quality.” Seven of the CT scanners with this capability are in operation at Methodist’s locations throughout the Houston area, and 2 of those are right here at Methodist Sugar Land Hospital. To schedule Imaging Services at Methodist Sugar Land Hospital, call 281-274-7170 or for a physician referral call, 281-274-7500. Dr. Charles T. Hankins Named Chief Medical Officer for Texas Children's Hospital West Campus
HOUSTON (September 8, 2010) --- Texas Children’s Hospital today announced that Charles T. Hankins, M.D., has been appointed chief medical officer for West Campus, its first community hospital, currently under construction at I-10 and Barker Cypress in West Houston. With 23 years of pediatric practice experience, Hankins will lead the West Campus medical team and oversee the quality of medical care, ensuring Texas Children’s standards of excellence. He will serve as the campus’ primary medical liaison to community physicians and play an integral role in the strategic growth and development of the facility.
A board certified neonatologist, Hankins has been instrumental in expanding Texas Children’s community presence during his seven-year tenure with the hospital. Most recently he served as medical director for its community initiatives program, leading the development of a model that enables Texas Children’s to provide its nationally-recognized pediatric patient services and expertise to community hospital partners. His efforts contributed to the successful implementation of Texas Children’s services at five Houston-area hospital locations, including two St. Luke’s Hospital facilities and three within The Methodist Hospital System. Concurrently, Hankins has served as medical director for Newborn Services at St. Luke’s The Woodlands Hospital, maintaining a clinical practice there and serving on the hospital board of directors. He is also an associate professor of pediatrics at Baylor College of Medicine.
“Dr. Hankins’ medical expertise, leadership skills and community experience are ideally suited for the role of chief medical officer at West Campus,” said Michelle Riley-Brown, vice president of Texas Children’s Hospital West Campus. “We are delighted to welcome him and know that the patients and staff of Texas Children’s first community hospital will benefit greatly from his knowledge and passion for excellence in community medical care.”
Hankins began his medical career in the military, completing an internship and residency in pediatrics and a fellowship in neonatal/perinatal medicine while serving in the U.S. Army. Afterward he spent twelve years in private practice in Memphis, TN, and served as medical director for a medical practice group. During subsequent work for a Memphis-based hospital system, he held multiple leadership roles and served on several strategic administrative task forces. Throughout his career, Hankins has held academic positions with several medical teaching institutions, engaged in research and authored articles for medical journals and reference books.
“I’m honored to be a part of West Campus’ inaugural leadership team and to contribute to the strategic expansion of Texas Children’s quality pediatric care in the Greater West Houston area,” said Hankins. “I look forward to the many ways we can benefit the health of children and families by expanding access to the services they need in a community setting.”
A native of Greeneville, TN, Hankins received his medical degree from The University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis and his master’s of business administration and undergraduate degree from The University of Tennessee, Knoxville.
Licensed to practice medicine in Texas and Tennessee, Hankins is certified in pediatrics by the American Board of Pediatrics and is a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics. In April 2010 he was recognized as Physician of the Year by St. Luke’s The Woodlands Hospital. Prior honors include the Miracle in Motion Award from the Methodist Health System in Memphis and a certificate of appreciation from the State of Tennessee.
Designed, equipped and staffed exclusively to treat children, Texas Children’s Hospital West Campus will incorporate the best practices in pediatric treatment environments and provide the special accommodations that families need in a children’s medical facility. The outpatient facility is scheduled to open in December 2010, offering a comprehensive array of pediatric sub-specialty services. The inpatient facility and 24/7 dedicated pediatric emergency center are slated to open in spring 2011 and will include surgical suites, 48 intermediate and acute-care patient beds, advanced imaging services including MRI and CT scans, and a neurophysiology sleep laboratory.
West Campus pediatric sub-specialty services will include audiology, cardiology, endocrine/diabetes, gastroenterology, hematology/oncology, neurology, physical and occupational therapy, ophthalmology, orthopedic surgery, otolaryngology, pediatric surgery, pulmonary medicine, speech therapy and urology.
Employing evidence-based design principles, the new hospital will feature interior and exterior design elements that promote patient well-being such as natural light, views of water and nature, child-life play areas and outdoor park-like patient and family areas. Located on 55 acres, West Campus will offer ample free parking.

East Texas Acoustic Duo Adler and Hearne to Perform at St. Joseph's Church Saturday, September 18
When they arrive at St. Joseph's Church in Galveston from Spring Hollow Organic Song Farm deep in the East Texas piney woods, performing songwriters Lynn Adler and Lindy Hearne will fill the sanctuary with their signature grassroots-acoustic blend of folk, blues, bluegrass, gospel and original ballads. Their show, sponsored by Galveston Historical Foundation, is set for September 18 at 7:30 p.m. at St. Joseph's Church, 2202 Avenue K in Galveston. Tickets at $10 each can be purchased by calling 765-3410, emailing education@galvestonhistory.org or online at www.galvestonhistory.org. Adler and Hearne met as solo artists in Nashville. They describe their music as "a spirited blend of folk-country blues-grass." Their repertoire ranges from soulful love songs to campy modern-day renditions of spirituals and children's songs laced with grownup overtones. Their favorite venues to play include festivals, colleges, coffeehouses, churches, community concert halls, and especially house concerts.
Their debut CD, Opposites Attract, (Spring Hollow 2005) was recorded live during one of their house concerts. In a Winter, 2007, review of the CD in Sing Out magazine, writer Kari Estrin described Adler's vocals as ranging from crystalline ("Lullabye") to sultry ("He's So Big"). "Their instrumental work together provides a rich backdrop to their duets and harmonies, Estrin wrote. "Two songs that showcase the strength of Adler and Hearne's writing and performance are the achingly heartfelt "Take It Back" and the rousing "Hollerin' The Hills." The concert venue, St. Joseph's, is the oldest German Catholic Church in Texas and the oldest wooden church building in Galveston, built by German immigrants in 1859. Now desanctified and managed by Galveston Historical Foundation, the gothic revival church is distinguished by its elaborately detailed coffered wooden ceiling, delicately painted wooden sanctuary, original pews and hand-carved altars. GHF preserves the building as a museum and makes it available as an event venue. Proceeds from the concert will go to GHF, the second-largest local historic preservation organization in the U.S., whose mission is to preserve and revitalize the architectural, cultural and maritime heritage of Galveston Island for the education and enrichment of all. For more information about Adler and Hearne, go to http://www.adlerandhearne.com/bio.html. For more information about Galveston Historical Foundation, go to www.galvestonhistory.org.

Author Sherrie McLeRoy to Lecture on Ashton Villa's Most Famous Resident, Bettie Brown
Galveston's oldest Broadway mansion, the antebellum Italianate Ashton Villa, was home to one of Galveston's most unforgettable women--the famously independent, never-married artist Bettie Brown (1855-1920). "Miss Bettie," as she is still remembered familiarly in Galveston, was a feminist before the age of feminism--choosing to pursue her own path and eschew social conventions during the highly restrictive Victorian era. Sherrie McLeRoy, author of "Daughter of Fortune: the Bettie Brown Story," will lecture about Miss Bettie's uncompromising, unfettered Victorian life on Thursday, September 23, 12:15 p.m., at Ashton Villa, 2328 Broadway. The lunchtime lecture is free and open to the public. Reservations are not required. The event is sponsored by Galveston Historical Foundation. McLeRoy, a former museum administrator turned writer and independent historical scholar, first became acquainted with the Brown family history when she lived in Galveston and worked at Ashton Villa in the 1980s. She has written some 20 other books, including "Grace & Gumption: Stories of Fort Worth Women" and "Grape Man of Texas: Thomas Volney Munson and the Origins of American Viticulture," honored as "Best Wine History Book in the World for 2004" by Gourmand World Cookbook Awards . Ashton Villa, Miss Bettie's home from the time she was a little girl until her death in 1820, was built in 1859 by James Moreau Brown, Miss Bettie's father, a wholesale hardware merchant, railroad corporation president and banker. Miss Bettie traveled frequently, often abroad and often unchaperoned (regarded as highly suspect behavior by Galveston provincial society). She studied art with the Royal Court painter in Vienna, and created numerous paintings that adorned the walls of Ashton Villa during her lifetime there and later, when the house served as a museum for several decades. Miss Bettie served on the lady board of managers of the Letitia Rosenberg Home for Women and the Lasker Children's Home in Galveston. On one occasion, she and other managers of the Letitia Rosenberg Home sponsored a "tango dance" as a fundraiser. It drew a great deal of criticism from various groups in the city but Brown insisted that the tango was "perfectly harmless" and that the benefit would go ahead as planned. For more information about the Bettie Brown lunchtime lecture at Ashton Villa, contact Denise Alexander, director of museums and museum programs for Galveston Historical Foundation, at 409-765-3410. Galveston Historical Foundation, the second-largest local historic preservation organization in the U.S., preserves and revitalizes the architectural, cultural and maritime heritage of Galveston Island for the education and enrichment of all. GHF saved Ashton Villa from potential demolition in the 1970s, restored it, and has served as its steward ever since. For complete information about GHF's programs, events, attractions, and stewardship activities, visit www.galvestonhistory.org.

The Taylor HS Band After the Parade
To the neighborhood communities of Green Trails, Nottingham Country and Memorial Parkway:
Despite the 100+ head index, you came out to support our first ever Taylor Band Community Parade and March-A-Thon. While we previewed our new 51’ equipment trailer and performed 20 mini-concerts along the 6 mile route through the neighborhoods, you provided treats and much encouragement. Thanks to the people who made signs, carried balloons and even put money into our buckets. Lots of young children danced and a few even “marched” along with us for a few blocks. During our route, we saw friends from the 7 Lakes Band, Taylor Pacesetters and even a few of our alumni and their parents – thanks for coming out to cheer us on! Thanks are also due to numerous fire trucks that blazed the route, 9 constable cars that provided safe passage on our streets, and various EMS personnel who stayed with us all day. Our 300 marchers were also supported by over 50 Band Booster volunteers who dedicated their day to keeping the students hydrated, sun screened and fed. With your help, we raised over 15,000.00 to support the Taylor Band programs and our trip the perform at this year’s Sugar Bowl.
Many thanks,
Taylor Band

DOWNTOWN FULSHEAR CANDY STORE NOMINATED FOR TEXAS AWARD
The Sweet Tooth Shoppe, located at FM 359 in downtown Fulshear, has been nominated as one of four finalists in the Best Downtown Business category for the 2010 Texas Downtown Association Presidents Awards Program. Since 1998, the Awards Program has recognized more than 150 projects, events and people that make a difference in Texas downtowns. Finalists will make a presentation at the Texas Downtown Revitalization Conference in El Paso on November 11, and the winner will be announced at the Awards Gala that evening. The Best Downtown Business award recognizes an exceptional downtown business that positively promotes the downtown or commercial district and actively participates in the revitalization efforts. The Sweet Tooth Shoppe is the only business being nominated for 2010 in the greater Houston area. The Sweet Tooth Shoppe opened in February 2009, but the idea came about in August 2008. Karen O’Neill, owner, was driving through Fulshear with her husband and realized that the area needed a candy store. Besides selling chocolate, candy and ice cream, O’Neill knew a candy shop would serve some other purposes as well. “We make a huge difference in the lives of so many by the smiles we put on people’s faces when they walk through the front door,” O’Neill said. “A new customer recently said to me, ‘You may not be rich in money, but you are rich with the blessings and great memories you have given so many.’ We have great customers and friends who have helped make a huge difference in our store, but that was probably the most touching thing anyone has ever said.” “I am extremely proud to be part of the Fulshear business community. Fulshear, although close to Katy and west Houston, remains virtually unknown by too many. The City of Fulshear has some dynamic individuals dedicated to helping businesses and bringing new businesses to the community. Cheryl Stalinsky, Economic Development Director, nominated The Sweet Tooth Shoppe for this award and put it all together. We wouldn’t be here without her.” The Sweet Tooth Shoppe is located at 8503 FM 359, Fulshear. They offer a wide variety of chocolates, candies, ice cream, shakes, malts, and coffee. For more information, visit www.sweettoothshoppe.com, call 281-533-0477, or become a fan on their Facebook page. Visit www.texasdowntown.org for more information on the Texas Downtown Association. “I consider it a memory store. It’s a great place for everyone age two to 102,” O’Neill said. “It brings out the child in all of us…..and in a time of uncertainty and difficulty, we are proud to bring out the smiles and help people have a good time.”

COUNTY MUSEUM ACCEPTS NEW ARTIFACTS AND OPENS NEW EXHIBIT
Over 400 new artifacts have been accepted into the collection of the Galveston County Historical Museum. The artifacts relate to the county’s history and they range from military uniforms to Mardi Gras costumes. The public can view some of the newly donated items in a small exhibit at the Galveston County Courthouse at 722 Moody/21st Street. The exhibit highlights the activities going on throughout the county during World War II. Since the founding of Galveston, this area has had a long history of military activity. During the 1940s these actions were concentrated on coastal artillery training and enemy submarine patrolling. Numerous camps also housed European POWs. “A few months ago we had put out a release requesting World War II material because we were working with the Texas Historical Commission on a special research project,” said museum director Jodi Wright-Gidley. “We received a huge response and many of our newest donations are related to our county’s World War II story.” New donations include uniforms from every branch of the military, photographs, letters, and ration books. Additional recent donations include a 1930 Mardi Gras junior king costume, postcards, and farm equipment from La Marque. The new donations will be digitally catalogued and properly stored until new exhibits are developed and installed. The museum building remains closed awaiting repairs from Hurricane Ike damage. If you are interested in donating artifacts to the museum that relate to our area’s history, please contact the museum at 409-766-2340.

Methodist Sugar Land Hospital celebrates new Spine Center
Methodist Sugar Land Hospital continues their legacy of Leading Medicine by bringing the only comprehensive back and neck pain program in Southeast Texas to Fort Bend County. To celebrate the opening of the Spine Center at Methodist Sugar Land Hospital, the Fort Bend Chamber members joined Methodist Sugar Land Hospital’s staff and physicians in an open-house. Those attending the event had a chance to tour the Spine Center and physical therapy area, meet the physicians and hear about the services now offered by the Spine Center. “We are excited that Methodist Sugar Land Hospital has chosen to provide our community with this high level spine care,” said Mayor Pro Tem, Thomas Abraham. “Now residents of Fort Bend County and surrounding counties can have access to comprehensive, state-of-the-art care for back and neck pain.” The center features a unique spine care navigation service, designed to help patients receive the complete spine care they need from diagnosis and treatment through rehabilitation services — all in one convenient location. It’s not uncommon for people suffering with back and neck pain to try many kinds of treatment without real relief, and it can be frustrating to wait many weeks for an appointment with a specialist. At the core of Methodist Sugar Land Hospital’s Spine Center is a nurse practitioner or “navigator” who will help patients get going in the right direction. “We believe patients with back and neck pain should have the benefit of comprehensive care that includes easy access and a simple process from start to finish,” says Rajesh K. Bindal, M.D., board-certified neurosurgeon and medical director of the Spine Center. “Our innovative approach to care helps all patients — walk-ins and those with physician referrals — see the right specialist they need very quickly.” “Care is coordinated by a nurse navigator assigned to each patient who then assists the patient through the treatment process,” says Dr. Bindal. “The nurse schedules all appointments and continues to meet with the patient to discuss the treatment plan, answer questions and help educate the patient about his or her treatment and condition.” The new Spine Center is located on the Methodist Sugar Land Hospital campus with easy access off Town Center Boulevard. Patients with primary care physician referrals, as well as those without referrals, are welcome. For more information or to schedule an appointment at Methodist Sugar Land Hospital’s Spine Center, please call 281-313-BACK (2225). For more information on Methodist Sugar Land Hospital, visit www.MethodistSugarLand.com or call 281-274-7500 for a physician referral.

Houston Texans and Methodist educate high school athletes on sports safety
High school students in the Sugar Land area got an inside look into the world of sports and sports injuries from a former Houston Texans player thanks to a new sports education program. The Methodist Hospital System and the Houston Texans teamed up to present Playing It Safe, an interactive program designed to educate high school athletes on the importance of sports injury awareness. Athletes from Travis, Elkins and Hightower high schools had the opportunity to meet and interact with former Houston Texans kick returner J.J. Moses and Methodist athletic trainer Angela Byrd, as well as Methodist physicians, Drs. Timothy Sitter and Christopher Smith, who shared their knowledge of the industry and tips on how to become and stay a well-rounded, healthy athlete. Moses shared his story of what it’s like to be a professional athlete and spoke on the importance of working hard, doing well in school and preparing for games. He also shared several qualities that help students deal with an injury and tips on how to successfully return from an injury. “This program has allowed representatives from Methodist and me to talk to the student athletes about the importance of overcoming adversity to become great athletes and do great things in life,” said Moses. Byrd, athletic trainer for Methodist Orthopaedic Specialists of Texas, emphasized the need for proper stretching, strength and conditioning and expressed the importance of staying away from steroids and other performance enhancing drugs. Both schools’ sports physicians were on hand to discuss injuries they commonly see as orthopedic surgeons, and gave instructions on stretches and exercises used to help reduce the risk of and prevent injury. For an appointment at Methodist Orthopaedic Specialists of Texas, call 281-494-MOST (6678).

Missouri City Names New General Manager
City Manager Frank Simpson announced today that the “Show Me City” has hit another milestone with the operation of the Quail Valley Golf Course. Shortly after the City first took possession of the property and started running the course in June 2008, Staff realized the need for outside expertise to help transition from a private club to a public facility. After advertising an RFP and considering several proposals from well-qualified firms and individuals, the City entered into an agreement with Dave Elmendorf of the William Charles Group to help with that transition, Simpson said.
“When Dave was brought aboard, he told management that his objective was to work himself out of a job by training golf course staff and the Missouri City Recreation and Leisure Corporation to fly solo,” Simpson said. “We are pleased to announce that Dave was successful in achieving his goal and has trained an able successor, Tyson Stittleburg.”
Effective Monday August 9, 2010, Stittleburg will become General Manager/Head Golf Professional at the Quail Valley Golf Course.
Dave will remain on-site for the next two to three months as a consultant to Tyson. Simpson said his focus will be:
1.) Providing assistance with developing a marketing plan to increase the number of rounds of golf;
2.) Developing more detailed cost analyses for the food and beverage operation so that City Council can make some decisions in the short term and for opening the new facility in 2012; and
3.) Serving as a transitional resource for Tyson in his new role as General Manager.
“While the City is working hard toward growing revenues to continue to meet expenditures, staff is also pleased with how much progress has been made,” Simpson said, explaining that the City has experienced and overcome many challenges, including facing court battles; a complete course reconstruction; a major hurricane; record cold, drought and rain; and a historic recession. “Additionally, we’re well on our way to fulfilling the original vision of the Quail Valley Parks Project: To preserve green space, improve property values across the community, and to create a focal point and a gathering place that will attract people from across the area to Missouri City so they, too, can experience our great community.”
Simpson added that, “Missouri City appreciates all of the hard work Dave Elmendorf and the William Charles Group have put forth in making Quail Valley Golf Course a premier destination and Tyson will continue to build upon this success.”

Galveston County Historical Museum Seeks Artifacts from the Hotel Galvez
The Galveston County Historical Museum is collaborating with Hotel Galvez & Spa, A Wyndham Grand Hotel, to create a new history exhibit for the hotel’s centennial celebration. Items donated to the County Museum will become part of its permanent collection.
“Our museum collects anything related to Galveston County history and at this time we are focusing efforts on getting new donations of materials related to Hotel Galvez,” says Galveston County Historical Museum Director Jodi Wright-Gidley. “The hotel already has several postcards but we are looking for additional unique items such as personal photographs, invitations to events, guest books, or other items that may have been original to the hotel but lost over the years.” Those interested in donating items should contact the museum at (409) 766-2340. Donated items are tax deductible.
When Hotel Galvez opened in 1911, Galveston had finished building its 17-foot Seawall to protect the Island and its grade raising project which raised the grade of land to make buildings less susceptible to flooding in the event of future storms. The Causeway had been completed, now connecting Galveston Island to the mainland. All of these accomplishments were part of the Island’s recovery following the Great Storm of 1900.
The Hotel Galvez originally opened on June 10, 1911. This elegant beachfront hotel was immediately proclaimed “Queen of the Gulf” and within a year of opening, it was deemed the “best arranged and most richly furnished seaside hotel in America” by Hotel Monthly. Hotel Galvez still stands as a symbol of Galveston Island’s resilience in the face of disaster.

EXCITEMENT BUILDS AND RUNNERS PREPARE AS GALVESTON HISTORICAL FOUNDATION AND MOSTYN LAW FIRM PLAN FOR SECOND ANNUAL GALVESTON REBIRTH-REVIVAL RACE
Galveston Historical Foundation announces the Second Annual Historic Galveston Rebirth Revival Race, presented by Mostyn Law Firm, scheduled for the morning of Saturday, September 11, 2010.
Last year’s 5K Rebirth Race was a huge success with more than 950 runners and walkers registered and 150 volunteers. “And that’s not even counting all the people who were cheering and waving flags on their porches,” says Clay Wade, director of events at GHF. In hopes of improving upon last year’s success, this year’s race will offer both 5K and 10K routes for participants as well as a 1K Kids’ Run.
The race route begins at the Mardi Gras arch in front of the Historic Tremont House hotel, and winds through the historic downtown, Silk Stocking, Kempner Park and San Jacinto neighborhoods. After the race, there will be a family-friendly celebration at Saengerfest Park.
GHF will award medals to the winners of each category. The Hotel Galvez & Spa will supply a gift certificate for a two-night stay, valued at $500, to each of the overall winners, male and female, in both the 5K and 10K races.
“We are very excited to offer this fun and healthy event to the line-up of our other fundraisers. Support of the 1K Kids’ Run, 5K and 10K Run/Walk will enable GHF to persist in keeping Galveston historic,” says Wade.
The Mostyn Law Firm is partnering with GHF to sponsor the race. “Galveston Island has been part of my family for as long as I can remember,” says Steve Mostyn, the firm’s founder. “Every summer we vacationed here, creating the best memories of my life. Now, we own a condo here where we bring our kids almost every weekend. I am happy to give back to Galveston by supporting Galveston Historical Foundation and the restoration of Galveston Island."
The law firm, with offices in Houston, Beaumont and Austin, specializes in insurance and personal injury claims as well as complex business litigation.
Participants in the Rebirth Revival Race can look forward to experiencing a diverse mix of historic homes and buildings dating as far back as the early 1800s. Some of the historic attractions along the race route include Ashton Villa, The Lyceum of Galveston Island, Open Gates, Old Central Cultural Center and Garten Verein.
“Texans have long recognized that the historic buildings and neighborhoods of Galveston are some of the local places that make the island unique,” says Dwayne Jones, executive director of GHF. “The race will highlight several of our historic neighborhoods and the threatened cast iron buildings downtown.”
All proceeds from the Mostyn Law Firm Galveston Rebirth Revival Race will go towards supporting GHF and its mission of preservation, community redevelopment, stewardship of historic properties and public education. GHF seeks volunteers to assist in all aspects of the event. For more information contact Clay Wade, Director of Events, at 409-765-7834 or clay.wade@galvestonhistory.org ABOUT GALVESTON HISTORICAL FOUNDATION Incorporated in 1954, Galveston Historical Foundation is one of the nation's largest local preservation organizations. Over the last 50 years, the foundation has expanded its mission to encompass community redevelopment, public education, historic preservation advocacy, maritime preservation and stewardship of historic properties. Back to School... Shop Resale for A+ Savings
The back-to-school shopping season is the 2nd largest consumer spending time of the year. Total back-to-school spending for Kindergarten through 12th grade this year is estimated to reach $21.35 billion according to the National Retail Federation’s (NRF) 2010 Back to School Survey, conducted by BIGresearch. According to the survey, families with school-aged children plan to spend an average of $606.40 on back-to-school purchases of clothes, shoes, supplies and electronics, compared to $548.72 last year. Clothing and accessories remains the largest spending category. Average back-to-school spending by category per family is estimated to be: • Clothing and Accessories: $225.47 • Electronics/Computers: $181.60 • Shoes: $102.93 • School Supplies: $96.39 While spending for school-age children in grades K-12 is expected to increase this year, per person sales on back to college merchandise is expected to remain similar to last year. The survey showed that the average student will spend $616.13 on new apparel, furniture for dorms or apartments, school supplies and electronics—compared to $618.12 spent last year. Total back-to-college spending is expected to reach $33.77 billion. 2010 back-to-college and back-to-school spending combined will total $55.12 billion. Back-to-school shopping is big business for merchants, but it does NOT have to break the bank account. From Kindergarten to College... students can be outfitted at resale, consignment and thrift stores for a fraction of the original price. Parents who understand value do not let back-to-school shopping sabotage their budget. Resale shops are a great source for clothing. They stock good quality, current style apparel at great prices—especially appreciated since children outgrow their clothes so quickly. The appeal of resale continues to grow as the economy struggles to recover. Parents who remain cautious in how and where they spend their back-to-school dollars this year are recognizing resale as the solution to their budget concerns. NARTS member Cheryl Corbett of Small Changes Kids in League City, Texas says, "Outfitting your children for the first day of school doesn’t have to break the bank this year. Resale, consignment and thrift shops offer a wealth of reasonably priced, trendy clothes. The affordability of resale shopping helps parents send their children back to school in style."

Research shows that the biggest factors in a mother’s breastfeeding success are her determination and access to good information and support. If questions come up during your pregnancy or after your baby is born, you are welcome to call a local La Leche League Leader and/or to attend a La Leche League (LLL) of Fort Bend meeting.
Pictured above are some of the LLL of Fort Bend Leaders who are happy to speak with you. Leaders provide free phone helping to moms with breastfeeding questions and also host two free meetings each month that are open to any interested women (babies welcome as well!). La Leche League is a non-sectarian, non-profit volunteer organization offering mother-to-mother support, encouragement, and information to women who want to breastfeed their babies. We seek to support all women, whether they nurse their baby for one day, one week, one month, one year or beyond.
LLL of Fort Bend’s evening meeting is on the second Monday of the month at 7pm at the Memorial Hermann Sugar Land Hospital. Our daytime meeting is on the third Monday of the month at 10:30am at the River Park Club House. To speak to an accredited La Leche League Leader, call Laura at 281-277-4989 or Melia at 281-344-8585 or visit www.lllhouston.org. For more information about breastfeeding, visit www.lalecheleague.org.
Come to our Family Night and Fundraiser at Skeeter’s Mesquite Grill, 16535 Lexington Blvd., Sugar Land, TX, on Tuesday, August 10th, from 5-8pm. Be sure to mention La Leche League at the register, as a portion of the proceeds will go to La Leche League of Fort Bend.
